UCLA was established in 1919 when the Los Angeles Normal School became the Southern Branch of the University of California. The institution expanded so rapidly through the 1920s that the school soon had outgrown their 25-acre campus. By the end of the decade, the school officially became UCLA, began building its Westwood campus, and adopted the "Bruins" mascot. This specific Joe Bruin wouldn't be introduced until 1964, but he's just as famous as UCLA's rapid rise as the academic and athletic powerhouse it is today.
