Led by head coach Danny Ford in his fourth season, the Clemson Tigers rolled through the 1981 regular season undefeated, highlighted by victories over No. 4 Georgia and No. 9 North Carolina. Their remarkable season earned them a No. 1 ranking and a matchup with No. 4 Nebraska in the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Day. The Tigers took care of business in Miami with a 22-15 win, earning them their first national championship.
