Led by cornerback Charles Woodson—the first and only defensive player to win the Heisman Trophy—the Michigan Wolverines ran through the 1997 season with an undefeated record to win the National Championship. Ranked No. 17 in the preseason polls, Michigan defeated No. 8 Colorado, No. 2 Penn State, and No. 4 Ohio State on their way to a matchup with Pac-10 champion Washington State in Pasadena for the 1998 Rose Bowl. After a 21-16 victory over Ryan Leaf and the Cougars, the Wolverines had laid claim to their 11th national title in program history.
