1983 belonged to the SIU Salukis, as their football program made their way to the peak of NCAA Division I-AA. Though they missed out on the Missouri Valley Conference championship due to their conference loss against Wichita State, Saluki football put its sights on a bigger prize in the I-AA playoffs. Alums of that team credit the defense, specifically cornerbacks Donnell Daniel and future NFL-er Terry Taylor, as hallmarks of Southern Illinois’ success that year.
