This classic Howard snapback is a varsity-inspired staple, as classic as their Bison nickname. After the Civil War, a troop of African American soldiers earned the respect of a Native American tribe who referred to them as Buffaloes, in admiration of their resolve during the war. Years later after Howard’s founding in 1867, Howard football head coach and former Civil War soldier Edward Morrison recalled the story when he nicknamed the team the Bison.
