This slightly grumpy version of the Idaho Vandal debuted in the 1940s, about a decade before the “Joe Vandal” mascot tradition took shape in the ‘50s. A yell leader named Bill Currie donned a homemade mask and created Joe’s persona. It seems that when Joe Vandal got more cheerful, so did the official logo; Idaho debuted a new logo in 1967 that’s identical to this, but his expression was changed to a smile.
