Early Oregon athletics teams were known as the Webfoots, a nickname with varied origin stories, but one tied to the state's early history. Since Ducks have webbed feet, many began to associate the Oregon Webfoots with ducks, and when a live duck became the Webfoots’ mascot in the 1920s, the shorter “Ducks” nickname stuck. This Oregon football design pays tribute to the Webfoots' history on the field and as a key part of the state's story.
