After Louisiana Tech selected the bulldog as its mascot, benefactors of the university, the Matthews family, donated the first live bulldog mascot. Their sons became Tech I's caretakers. While Louisiana Tech has had several live bulldog mascots since, they also have a costumed mascot named Champ, who has represented LA Tech since 1973.
