In what became known as the “Duel in the Desert,” #2 Penn State defeated #1 Miami 14-10 in the Fiesta Bowl on January 2, 1987 in Tempe, Arizona to win the 1986 National Championship. More than 70 million people watched the Nittany Lions defense wear down Miami and their Heisman Trophy-winning QB Vinny Testaverde in a primetime matchup on NBC, breaking the record for a college football telecast. This t-shirt design was inspired by Penn State team captain and All-American Shane Conlan’s football helmet from that season, featuring his classic intimidating facemask. Conlan intercepted Testaverde twice that night, one of which set up the game-winning touchdown from his teammate, All-American running back D.J. Dozier.
