Behind seven-foot-four center Tom Burleson, point guard Monte Towe, and All-American David “Skywalker” Thompson, the 1974 NC State basketball team tore through the regular season with a 24-1 record, their lone loss coming to the seven-time defending national champions UCLA Bruins. After ACC regular season and tournament titles, the Wolfpack played the first two games of the NCAA tournament on their home court at Reynolds Coliseum. With an epic Final Four victory against UCLA to avenge their regular-season loss, NC State advanced to the championship, defeating Marquette 76-64 to bring home the program’s first national title.
