The Little 500 was first founded in 1951, when IU Foundation executive director Howdy Wilcox Jr. devised a charity bike race that would mimic the Indianapolis 500. Of course, the Indy 500 is the quintessential racing weekend in Indiana (and the world), but Wilcox had personal inspiration when creating the Little Five – his father won the 500 in 1919.
