While Alabama did not officially make Big Al the university's athletic mascot until 1979, the football team in particular lived up to their "Red Elephants" nickname for their towering players donned in their world-famous crimson. In the 1940s, the school incorporated the elephant unofficially in their game day festivities; they even had a live elephant mascot named Alamite, who used to lead the homecoming parade.
