In Bear Bryant’s 16th year coaching his alma mater, the Alabama Crimson Tide won their ninth national championship. The Tide won the UPI national championship vote, which took place before postseason bowl games. The Tide lost the 1974 Sugar Bowl against Notre Dame by just one point, 24-23.
