While Campbell legends suggest the “Camels” nickname is a hundred years older than this grumpy Fighting Camel that they debuted in 2004, it’s possible that the Monogram Club simply changed its nickname from “Hornets” to “Camels,” and the campus embraced the unique mascot. Another theory from writer Billy Liggett suggests the nickname came from a donor connected to Camel cigarettes. Despite school founder J.A. Campbell’s disdain for tobacco, money talks – the tobacco magnate’s donation may have brought the Fighting Camels to life.
