When GM Goodwrench sponsored the No. 3 car in 1988, the company wanted the car to be painted blue and white, in accordance with the brand’s existing colors. As the story goes, Richard Childress himself suggested to company executives that the car’s paint scheme should be mostly black, a decision that remains iconic to this day.
