The Toledo Rockets used this alternate wordmark from 1983 to 1995. Long before that, though, the Rockets earned their nickname, after a 1923 football game against Carnegie Tech. Toledo lost that game, but the real win was student James Neal concocting a nickname for the then-nameless Toledo football team. Neal called the team the "Skyrockets," and the nickname took off (no pun intended). Brought to you in partnership with College Vault.
